PRINCE GEORGE CITIZEN
Fine Construction Weather Wasted along the P. G. E.
llOl'ti >s KXPIBBBBED IN THE < ENTRAL iNTEIUOIt THAT THE iM'UltTS WILL HASTEN THEIR REPORTS AM) ALLOW (ON-SHTltUCTION TO PROCEEDBfltfEFITH WITHHELD FKOM THIS CITY OWING TO DELAY.
I'lincr George does not think that the construction of the Pacific Great Biwtern Railway ih being built, at tho> huge expense which it has involved, solely for the purpose of giving this city direct communication willi Vancouver, but as tho northern terminus of tho line, (until the Peace i;i\.i extension is built), this city has a keener interest in the completion ,,l (he line than any other place in the province.
In spite of repeated promises that" t(n. |j,).' would be completed as speedily as possible the present ideal construction weather is going to waste as far as a continuance; of the work along the grace is concerned. Tlii' only people moving along the uncompleted portion of the line appears to l>" a succession of railway experts, forming reports of the line ,,, hand to the government, in order that itic ministers may have the benefit of qualified opinions upon >. !i.: iIm- prospects of the railway ,,.: ;is judged from the territory that is served.
.lust what all these reports mean, ;niil why they are required, passes t . comprehension oi the average taxpayer, a goodly portion of whose contributions to the. exchequer goes to pay the principal and interest of the P. (!. E. construction account. Expert advice upon the operation of the line, or upon revisions of the en-
gineering problems ns these have been decided, might save a Rood deal of money and facilitate operation, but there is no suggestion that the reports which are ho ing" collected are for such purposes, but are rather to deal generally with the P.G.E. as an interesting problem in political economy, f
The abstract phases of the P.G.E. question seem to be widely separated from the ever present need for the completion of construction to Prince George. The line is operating at present to Quesnel, a distance of 348.5 miles from Squamish dock, which is 4i) miles from Vancouver by water. The official distance from Quesnel to Fort George is 80 miles, and of this distance steel has been laid to the Cottonwood river, a distance of 17 miles north of Quesnel, and from Prince George south a distance of about 11> miles. There is therefore only 4 7 miles of the road to be finished. Thr r>Ig job on the unfinished portion of the line will be the Cottonwood river viaduct. the steel for which has been fabricated
formidable, than the trackless distance which separates Prince George, and the whole province, from the trade and development in the Peace River country, to which the P.G.E. must eventually be extended.
There is ho serious question as to the effect, of the pending reports upon the completion or trie P. G. E. be- i tween Prince George and Quesnel. The money was provided last year for the completion or the road, according to the reports or the government, and just why the work is halted in the limited period when construction work should be getting into its best stride in this section of! the province, remains a mystery that is disturbing to people living in central British Columbia.
The P.G-.E. now operates from Squamish dock to Quesnel over a route which is subctvlded by 5 4 stations. These stations with their j mileage distances from the dock, fol- j
