'victoria, May 1.�It is announced the date of the pending elections v be announced early next week. k'mier Oliver ig on his way back i Ottawa and is scheduled to ar-here tomorrow. E. railway foblem, in connection with the giv-[g of railway facilities to the Peace iver district. Usk, May 1.�At a meeting of Liberals of Usk and vicinity, Olof Hanson was unanimously endorsed .as the candidate of the party for the Skeena riding.

Southampton, May 1�William B Leeds, the former tinplate king, has arrived here to board the fishing smack Salem in which he announces his intention of crossing the Atlantic. The Salem is 60 feet long, and has a 60 h.p. auxiliary motor.

Atlanta. Ga., May 1.�A seiies of tornadoes swept the country t > the north of the Gulf of Georgia ye>*.or-day, doing immense property darn-age and causing considerable loss of life.. The states of South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia were the chief sufferers. The known dead number sixteen, seven persons are missing and the seriously injured number forty-two.
Atlanta, Ga., May 1.�Later reports from southeastern states place the death list at sixty-three, several hundred seriously injured and untold property damage. At Harrell Hills, South Carolina, two tornadoes met. demolishing a schoolhouse and trapping 75 children, four of whom were killed. The village of Fickelen, Georgia, was virtually wiped off the map.
