PULP AND IMPEJ5 MILL STILL IX THK CLOUDS
The people "f Prince George, \vh< have been waiting Lor developments in connection with the pulp and pa per in ill project, have another yeai ahead ef them which does not holt oven a hope that a move will be ma.it' toward the realization of thcii expectations. Robert Tyhurst. whe has been regarded as the ,harblngei of (lie elusive mill, has come and cone, ami with him departed the la:-t glimmering hope for any developments (luring 1925.
Ii i.; understood Mr. Tyhursi intimated the big industrial scheme is not > I ripe. This might mean of two tilings. It might mean firket it- not yet ready for r pulp and paper mill, or" it mean the men behind tho project have not secured the financial backing which would warrant th'em in making the necessary commitments. In the light of what L- taking place in,eastern Canada it would seem the fault is with the promoters rather than market j conditions.
If market conditions do not jU3-tiry a $10,000,000 pulp and p:\per industry at Prince George they should not warrant breaking ground on. a $27,000,00.0 pulp and paper project in tho valley cf Gatineau, and a couple of days after Mr. Tyhurst was breaking the news to Prince George people that conditions were not right the International Pulp and Paper company came out with its announcement that it would spend the larger sum in launching its new industry, and i building a city around it, for the j further exploration of the Edward? and Riordan timber limits. Thin i suggests that if the Prince George project is to get. under way during the life of residents the promoters will require to be jacked up. oi J other capitalists interested in tho 1 venture.
For the moment the interest the people of the Prince George dis I trict is centered in the railway sit ' uation. This prospect looks better j than it hits since the Brule line was first injected into the controversy It looks very much as if the railwaj j will be built into the Peace River | from Prince George or vicinity I If this happens it cannot fail to havi an important: bearing .upon the puir and paper mill. It may develop that the railway building will " be done by the Canadian Pacific company, and this in turn might furnish the required stimulus to get the .pulp and paper mill under way. It is admitted^ paper industry located at Prince Gtorge would be very advantaKoously placed for the economic receipt of its raw material." and that the .only unfavorable factor would be the long haul on the. paper to the point of consumption. This is just the class of bur-.iness the railways are after. A mill turning out one hundred tons of paper per day, which would require to b<>. hauled 1000 or 1500 miles by rail, would be a great sweetener for a branch line centering on Prince Georgo. Once the Canadian Pacific, company is committed to the building of the Peace River line its management might well go after b'.sinR.'jn of this magnitude. There is no less reason for the railway company engaging in the development of the forest industry in the northern part of British Columbia than there was for its taking over the direction of the mining industry in tue south, which it very successfully accomplished through the medium of its subsidiary The Consolidate! Mining and Smelting Company of Trail, anc through its extensive Interest in the hydro-electric venture of tho West Kootenay Power i>nd Lierht company. The big railway company hight cooperate with the present promoters of the local paper project, by finding the capital necessary to get the enterprise under way, or jt might elect to eliminate the eastern men altogether. The immense pulp concession of the district, are still the property of the province, and while Mr. Tyhurst's principals have heen flirting with them for a number of years they are by no means married to them. They are the owners of a large number of timber licences of considerable value as pulp producers, but of doubtful value for saw-log purposes. Their licences are not essential to the successful operations of a pulp mill at Prince Georgo, but if they are left out of the deal their owners would be in the position of a man left holding the sack.
Hon/ T. D. Patull lot worse than indi fans who are seeking t ish Columbia to sel i le River section. This if tensive area of deslrnbl land in tho province, need is settlement. Ci ment may not bo the for getting people unoi in the interior, but than no settlement ii initial procedure it < necessary for Rriti-adnpt it with colon! hers promise ready far as is known thoi jions to the Ukranin Numbers of them ha\ in the prairie provin nn*l have shown I he good farmers and goi ont to keep their clo meddle with the man school svstem, or into he general governH'< vir.eo in which they h sident.

FAILED TO BREAK TLE IN SATURDAY'S HOCKEY MATCH
-----------------------------
Wheat dropped from IS- to..16 i cents on the Winnipeg market on j Saturday, furnishing one of the most ! sensational markets in many years. j All told the price of wheat has fal-en approximately forty cents during the ten day period preceding Saturday. It is a safe bet that it will take the bakers more than ten days to get their prices for bread in line with the new wheat prices. The
The first game in the final so.rieh o determine the matter of the championship In the western hockey league, whi"h was played at Calvary on Saturday night, resulted in a tie with a score of 1-1, and the next ame is to be played at Victoria. The western champions will play the-"anadiens for the Stanley cup.
