Speaker Scores Federal Neglect Of Road Program
VANCOUVER (CP) � The federal government Is hiding behind the British North America Act to avoid its responsibility in developing Canadian highways, the B.C. Automobile Association1 was told here Wednesday.
H. R. Chauncey, president of the Canadian Automobile Association, arrived here from Calgary to address the annual convention of the B.C. body.
"We've been trying and trying to get federal authorities to take some action on the deplorable state of our highways," Mr. Chauncey said. "Kut they just hide behind the BNA."
Canadian highways, said Mr. Chauncey, were "built for 1,000,-000 model T's" but now have three and a half times that number of high powered cars using them.
In 1953, he said, the provinces spent $397,000,000 on highways, but the federal contribution was only $13,000,000.
