CANADA SAID DEFENCELESS
VANCOUVER (CP) Retired Army Colonel F, A, .Me-Tavish says Canada is de-
fenceless and the $2,000,000 spent annually on the armed forces is wasted.
The colonel, who ret i r e d March 15, told a service club Wednesday Canada -should ki-i out of all commitments and alliances and place existing forces al the disposal of the United Nations.
The Canadian mission for standardization of weapons .stationed in 'Canada's Little Pentagon" in Washington was a mockery and did nothing but consume time and provide travel opportunities for the mission.
By Special Correspondent j VICTORIA Tin' Social j Credit government has in-1 troduceel a bill which will remove the VVenner-Gren Pacific Northern Railway from Public Utilities Commission jurisclict ion.
The move gives the green light to the PNR to start construction under the Railway Act. The bill provides that the PUC docs not apply to the company, sponsored by Swedish financier Axel Wcn-ner-Grnn. and that if. there is any conflict between the railway and any other act, the Railway Act shall apply.
Last year, the PUC ruled that it had jurisdiction over the PNR and the company objected on the grounds that if all PUC conditions applied the railway would never be built.
One of the results of PUC | jurisdiction would be that public hearings would be held at which the PNR would have to produce evidence that it could he financed and operated without relying on any firm subsidy.
But all PUC decisions must be ratified by provincial cabinet and no cabinet approval was given in this case. The new bill is the cabinet's way out of the impasse. The railway is slated to run about 700 miles from Summit Lake, north of Prince George, to the Yukon border.
