A tiny parasite that doesn't know the difference between a human and a bird is giving swimmers the itch at Cluculz Lake.
The parasite certaria lives in the intestinal tract of a bird or animal and often is dropped into the lake. The certaria then latches onto a snail for a host.
It eventually leaves the snail in great numbers and floats to the top of the water, waiting for a bird to land. However, a swimmer sometimes comes on the scene first and the certaria, not knowing the difference, attacks him.
The parasite tries to penetrate the swimmer's skin but can't get all tho way through due to lie thickness. This causes a ash and itch.
In a bird, the parasite gets hrough into the flesh, often :ausing death.
Dr. G. H. Bonham, director f the Cariboo Health Unit, said lie rash can usually be prc-ented "by a swimmer rubbing imself thoroughly with a towel fter leaving the water. "The penetration doesn't start ntfl a person starts drying ff."
Dr. Bonham said the rash lears up on its own within four five days. "It isn't serious ut can be irritating," he said. If it is very bad, a doctor can escribe something to relieve e itchiness."
Certaria has only been re-
irted in Cluculz Lake so far
this year but, says Dr. Bonham,
can usually be found In any
lako.
