Page 4 LUMBER Market Is Ours -CLA OTTAWA CP Canadian lum lumber ber producers are claiming the right ol free access to the US softwood lumber market on the grounds that American produc producers ers cant keep up with demand in their own country In a statement made here Wednesday the Canadian Lum Lumbermens bermens Association said Ca nadian exports to the US in the last 10 years have rarely been enough to bridge the gap be between tween what the American indus industry try produces and what its mar market ket demands COOLING PERIOD Arguing against American de demands mands that Canada impose re restrictions strictions on its exports the statement said a cooling off period was needed to bring out facts that showed Canadian imports by the US could not possibly have put people out of work We can supply the best at the best price and as the top customer of the U SA wc have a right to ask that we be al allowed lowed to continue selling lum lumber ber at the present rate of pro progression gression and even at an ac accelerated celerated tempo if this is nec necessary essary to satisfy American de demand mand for lumber and wood products Commenting on the statement Henry Bahr vice - president of the National Lumber Manufac Manufacturers turers Association said the Am American erican industry might engage in a general anti - Canadian campaign unless Canada agreed to voluntary restrictions MORE TIME If the Canadian lumbermen want a cooling off period in or order der to give them more time to increase their exports to the US then of course we wont agreehe said in Washington The American producers had tried for years to maintain peaceful relations with the Ca Canadian nadian producers but if we get no co operation here wc may be forced to use every political prossure to defeat US policies that may be favorable to Can Canada ada He said the American indus industry try Is faced with increased un unemployment employment and is asking only for a fair settlement The Canadian association is well aware that through Cana Canadian dian dollar exchange manipula tion Canada is able to under undersell sell US softwoods in the US market The Canadian association used figures from the US depart department ment of commerce to illustrate its case against restrictions In 1961 American production had been 31700000000 feet with another 3700000000 from Can Canada ada and 3000000000 from other countries 10 PER CENT G E Bell general manager of the association said that in general the 3500000000 feet of lumber which Canada exports to the US A comprises approx approximately imately 10 per cent of the total American consumption In fact the increase in Ca Canadian nadian exports about which complaints are being raised amounts to approximately three per cent of the total American consumption 4 Mr Bahr said the American industry had offered to give Canada 10 per cent of the US market without tariffs providing a 10 per cent tariff were im imposed posed on shipments above that limit He said Canada has IS per cent of the softwoods market at present This market was main mainly ly for cedar douglas fir hem
