Heil Hitler crowd of 15000 greets Caouette Residents of the Cariboo federal riding have the next 48 hours to decide which of the four candidates they want to represent them in parliament We suggest there is little or no room for choice if the issues and the picture are studied clearly and carefully In order to properly clarify the picture and put it in perspective it must first be shorn of such red herrings as nuclear warheads anti Americanism unemployment the Columbia River treaty a national medical scheme trade with communist countries or whether Canada should join the Organization of American States True these all arc very vital subjects But they arc not issues in this campaign They arc matters which must be resolved by the incoming government They can only be resolved by a good one But the fact is that unless we elect a government which has a clear majority in parliament these and many other important matters will be no nearer solution than they were in the hands of the minority Conservative government which has ruled Canada since last June Majority government The first and most vital matter for the voters to decide therefore is how to elect a majority government Almost every expert in the nation is now pre predicting dicting the Liberals will emerge from Mondays election with the largest number of seats But many predict they will not get a clear majority of 134 seats or better In other words the experts think Canada will wind up with another minority government another gov government ernment which can do nothing because it must make deals with another political party as the Conserva Conservatives tives and the Social Creditors did during the life of the last parliament Every Canadian must realize that if this situation is allowed to develop again none of the urgent problems listed above will bo solved that wo shall undoubtedly have another costly election soon and that in the meantime our economy our trade and our international relations will crumble still further The experts all agree that only the Liberals have a chance a slim one but a chance nevertheless of forming a majority government It is in everyones personal interest therefore to seek to attain that goal by voting for a majority government in the only way we can by voting Liberal WHAT PARTY WHAT LEADER BILL CLOSE CHARLIE GRAHAM NDP Liberal mtJm AJl j PETER RUNKLE BERT LEBOE SATURDAY APRIL 6 1963 The candidates V ELECTION SPECIAL 5 It M xrt Month BT CARRIER Nucleor arms still major issue as campaign ends By The Canadian Press Campaigning in the final week of the election dug into a grab bag of issues but the nuclear controversy still emerged on top Election sparks were struck when it was disclosed in Wash Washington ington that US Defence Secre Secretary tary McNamara asserted that American and Canadian Bo marc anti aircraft missile bases would at the very least draw enemy fire if war erupted Prime Minister Diefenbaker campaigning in Quebec and On Ontario tario said the McNamara state statement ment made a hoax of the Lib Liberal eral position that the Bomarcs should be tipped with nuclear warheads The Liberal policy he de declared clared might make Canada into a burnt sacrifice in time of war Liberal Leader Pearson sneaking in the big cities slammed the prime ministers statements a s irresponsible demagogucry and desperate tactics of despertae men New Democratic Party Leader T C Douglas pressing for a non nuclear defence role for Canada said the US wants to arm the Bomarcs with nuclear heads to open the way for fur further ther more advanced nuclear weapons in Canada Social Credit Leader Thomp Thompson son who wants to turn the de dencc dilemma over to an all party parliamentary committee attacked Conservative defence relations with the US It is not good enough to hide under the American defence umbrella WHAT MAN Only three issues really count in Mondays election Five minutes is a short time to spend in consideration of so impor important tant a subject as the selection of your government It takes five min minutes utes to read this article Will you take five minutes to read this analysis of the election issues as they affect the Cariboo federal rid riding ing as a whole and the Prince George area in particular The second matter for the voter to decide is which party leader will make the best prime minister of Canada Obviously it is not going to be T C Douglas He is a man who was finally rejected by the people who know him best the voters of Saskathcewan As an MP in 1937 he tried as hard as any man can try to render Canada defenceless against her enemies He said recorded in the official debates of the House of Commons 1937 pp 1059 and 10G3 Against whom are we arming Oh I know the bogeymen have been trotted out in this chamber It has been suggested that it might be Italy it might be Germany it might be Japan Douglas was a better prophet than he intended His CCF now NDP party in the Commons was still opposing the Liberal governments preparations for national defence when Germany marched into Poland soon to be joined by Italy and then Japan After leading the province of Saskatchewan into a state of economic stagnation Douglas returned to the federal field this time as head of his party but apparently no more fitted than before to bo Canadas chief executive A silver tongue makes neither an economist nor a statesman Nor will it be the duplicate leaders of Social Credit Mr Thompson and Mr Caouette Thompsons 15 ycar apprenticeship as a mission missionary ary and educator in Ethiopia scarcely fits him to be the man to tell Canadians how their nation shall be run His monetary theories gleaned from a book on Social Credit have been tested and found wanting Caouettes leadership of a Quebec breakaway f but the rest of Canada is not ready for a dictator group testifies to an independent spirit in Quebec In 1933 Canadian voters gave John Diefenbaker and his Conservatives the biggest majority any Cana Canadian dian government has hail Four years later with unemployment at a record level and the economy close to being wrecked the voters took away that majority It should have brought Diefenbaker to his senses But it didnt Thanks to the brains and efforts of some of his senior ministers most of whom have since left him the economy has been much improved But that is all Diefenbaker has helped kick South Africa out of the Commonwealth has worked to kill Britains chances of joining the European Common Market and has deliberately forced Canada into a bitter row with our biggest trading partner and our biggest lumber buyer After three abortive chances to govern Canada well it is unthinkable that he be given another Lester B Pearson is left A poor image on television Perhaps but we need a prime minister not a movie actor Undecided about nuclear warheads Again per perhaps haps but Pearson is the man who as Canadas secretary of foreign affairs in the Liberal government of Louis St Laurent was hailed as one of the worlds great statesmen who helped create a Canadian image which once was respected throughout the world Pearson has the courage and the brains to recog recognize nize that a strong defence Is the best defence He conceived the idea of the United Nations Emergency he said then turn around and stick your tongue out at those who hold the mnarclla The hustings also heard speeches about economic prob problems lems Campaigning in his home riding of Algoma East Mr Pearson promised direct gov government ernment help to establish indus industries tries in hard up areas He said he isnt worried if his pledge is called socialism Sweeping from Vancouver to Moncton in the final week Mr Douglas said the spark for the economy should come from a redistribution of income through social spending and welfare measures He blamed foreign control of the economy for Canadas high jobless rate Mr Thompson who cam paigned in Alberta and Ontario promised to adjust family al allowances lowances and pensions annually to keep pace with living costs and take welfare measures out of the political arena We must put an end to the cheap practice of buying votes with election promises for high- er wclfaic benefits he said on a CBC free time tv broad broadcast cast BOMB HITS TOMMY VANCOUVER CPi A glass enclosed stink bomb about the size of a marble hit New Demo- I cratic Party leader T C Doug- j las on the neck at his rally here Wednesday The glass didnt break and the bomb was given to police Now hear this Lands and Forests minister Williston in a vote for Bert broadcast Thursday said what Canada needs most at Ottawa is Social Creditors Robert Thompson Real Caouette and Bert Leboe Thats like saying what this world needs to get anywhere is Kennedy Khrush Khrushchev chev and Charlie McCarthy Games of copcat are numer numerous ous in the campaign Local Tories had a Chinese Canadian on tv one night Liberals had one a couple of nights later Then the Tories put on a Dutch New Canadian and Liberals followed suit on that one too Now Conservative candidate Pete Runkles campaign man ager Eunice Roy plans to send the Liberals a bill for ideas Our Dawson Creek reporter Trev Schofield reports that Jim Spice returning oificer for Cariboo opened a ballot box sent from Ottawa and found Inside a scrap of cardboard on which was written I voto NDP South Fort George electors vote at the community fire hall not in Prince George said Lib- cral party worker Pete Pat- tullo in an effort to settle some confusion he said has arisen after cards were mailed telling voters of polling divisions 155 and 205 to vote at the fire hall Force to bring peace not war to the Suez and the Middle East And he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his realistic approach to this and other touchy situations This is the sort of man in whom we can safely place our trust to do the right thing about nuclear commitments During this campaign he has beer speaking the truth to Canadians even though some sometimes times it has been bitter truth which might cost his party votes And the third consideration for the voter is the local candidate The incumbent Mr Leboe may be well intentioned and a very nice fellow indeed But what can Leboe do for the Cariboo What good will it do to elect a man who represents a splinter party What can the people of Prince George or Quesnel or Vanderhoof hope to get for their communities by electing a man to Ottawa who is a member of a party which has no chance of forming the government Or a man who in two terms of office at Ottawa has never done a single thing for his riding The NDP candidate Mr Close has nothing to offer this riding except membership in a socialist party which doesnt even approve of the Canadian way of life Why fool around with another splinter party member MP should be potent Mr Runkle offers the voters an able and proven businessman who in a relatively short campaign has left a favorable impression of sound thinking a quick grasp of facts and situations and a good understand understanding ing of the problems which face his riding Mr Runkle undoubtedly would make a good member of parliament But again by all counts the Conservatives are finished as Canadas government so why elect an MP who can only represent us at Ottawa as a member of the opposition Only the governing party can bring in the sort of legislation which will provide this riding with the many things it needs In the Liberal candidate Charles Graham we have a man who came to Prince George in 1919 with little in his pockets and who by his own hard work and ability has made his way both in business and in civic administration If we elect Graham wo will get as our MP a man who is not only capable of handling the job but who has the added advantages for us of representing the only party which can form a government
