WTH PNR DEAD How will Bennett save face Premier Bennetts So Social cial Credit government has cancelled out the Pa Pacific cific Northern Railway It wrote finis to the Wcnner Gren hoax last Friday when it rescinded the PNHs special bor borrowing rowing powers its pro proposed posed right-of-way and its authority tc use crown land The question is Whats next If the Socrcds follow the pattern they have set in re recent cent vears the best guess is that the people of BC will build this railway whether they want to or not In the wind A look at recent BC gov government ernment history Indicates that something else is in the wind Otherwise there was no rea reason son to write off the PNR of officially ficially at this time The proposed 700 mile rail way between Prince George and the Yukon was one of Mr Bennetts favorite dreams He and fellow Social Creditors used the PNR promise to help win the 1960 election He pledged the day its so called construction was begun that it would never stop until it reached the Yukon Its write off is a tremendous loss of face which the Socrcds already having suffered heavy prestige losses in the south and facing others simply can cannot not afford Need alternative They need an alternative and they need it badly The only obvious alternative is for the provincial government to tackle the railway job or part of it This seems to be a safe guess in view of what hap happened pened to another Wcnner Gren hoax development of hydro hydroelectric electric power on the Peace River a project on whih MF Bennctt and his colleagues leaned heavily for political acceptance The Peace may or may not be economically feasible if its prime market is the Greater Vancouver area Without that populated and heavily indus industrialized trialized market the Peace could not be built Every en engineer gineer and economist knows it So did the Socrcds No jurisdiction The huge Greater Vancou Vancouver ver power market was con controlled trolled by the BC Electric Co a privately owned utility over which the government had no jurisdiction in respect to where it bought power And the BCE refused to sign up to buy Peace River power because it would bo too expensive and would force up electricity rates To save face for himself and his political party the premier had to take action or see his northern dream go flat So his government took over the BCE and its right to bar bargain gain for power then became the governments right Mr Bennett then also took over the rights and plans for nearly 10 million of the pub publics lics money and without the publics permission of the Peace River Power Develop Development ment Co and announced that the government owned BC lljio would build the Peace project and transmit its power pioduction to Vancouver Kudos were slow His problem solved the premier sat back to await kudos They were slow in coming His method of seizing the BCE at his own price was criticized throughout the fin financial ancial world Investors who might have put money into BC held back fearful that it would be subject to seizure at the governments whim Mr Bennetts refusal to let the people of B C vote on the takeover antagonized the peo people ple in the south They might have supported the plan But they were not asked Then Mr Bennetts Social Credit party lost the crucial Point Grey b election by a landslide to Liberal Pat Mc Geer In view of the money and big wheel type of cam campaign paign the Socrcds expended to win Point Grey its loss was a shocker to the party hier hierarchy archy Public opinion polls since then have shown the Socreds to be losing support in many directions Clearly something Continuod en Paga - Phon LOgon 4 2441 Vol 7 No 106 Tu
