EDITORIAL Another conspiracy Its only common sense hat the sole justification for a government taking over the production and sale of power is that it must sell power at low rates Power at cost has been the guiding principle of all successful public power systems Faithful adherence to this principle enabled Winnipeg City Hydro now part of Manitoba Hydro to provide the cheapest power in Nortli America at an average household rate of 75 cents a kilowatt hour Seattle City Light operating on the same principle lias comparable rates Ontario Hydro sells power for less than one cent a kilowatt hour So docs the Edmon Edmonton ton public power utility These are a few of many cases where proper operation of public power systems has brought great advantages to the communities they serve The Bennett idea of public power is exactly the reverse He has tried to use it as an instrument of personal power Already his perversion of the proper principle has backfired It has created a nasty mess that will impose a heavy penalty on the BC public In the meantime our power rates remain double the rates charged by other Canadian and US public power systems Prince George and the Central Interior badly need cheap power for economic expansion Secondary industries that we could establish here such as the manufacture of certain wood products when the US and Canada complete the new tariff deal now being negotiated will be greatly dependent on cheap power At present wc can offer only the highest electricity and gas rates in North America something which will drive these industries elsewhere That is the disastrous situation we face because of Bennett power policies Electricity rates must remain high as long as Bennett policies prevail Gas rates must remain cxhorbitant as long as Bennett favors and protects his friends the McMahons Wcstcoast Transmission and Inland Natural Gas who are the gas monopolists of BC We will establish these points in detail in due course Meanwhile during the present election campaign it is vital that every thinking person in the Central Interior should ask himself this question Why should I vote for a government that is deliberately obstructing new area development with policies that create prohibitive rates for primary power Police chief Nhu takes over power SAIGON Reuters South Viet Nams anti - American secret police chief Ngo I mil Nhu today
