in many cases the police pick up boys as young as 12 and 13 for these offences Staff Sgt Earl Sarslat of the city detachment of the RCMP says neither he nor Magistrate G O Stewart knows what to do about these youthful offenders Most of them are in court for the first time In their lives and In many cases the cars are found unharmed by the police We hate to see a first offender receive a sentence Staff Sgt Sarslat says In some cases though the stolen vehicles are completely stripped tires the radio and sometime even the engine removed At other times the thieves seem to delight In breaking windows and slashing upholstery before they abandon the car he pointed out But the juveniles seem to be stealing cars mainly for the thrill of Joy riding They just dont seem to care what happens in court Staff Sgt Sarslat says This uas borne out by wo friends of a youth who was in juvenile court on his second theft charge They said about him You couldnt kick sense into him This same youth received a six month definite and an Indefinite consecutive term at Brannan Lake Industrial School for Boys The stolen cars were easily taken In practically all cases the keys were left in the do this f
