Lower Mainland By VERN LACEY Citizen Staff Writer A dog-in-the-manger at attitude titude in the Lower Main Mainland land is keeping doctors out of the Central Interior a district doctor claims The South is knee deep In doctors while the North is chronically short because men who control the medical pro profession fession dont tell graduating doctors of the need or advan advantages tages of the more northern areas he says Young doctors dont want to leave the Lower Mainland the myth that this area is the Siberia of Canada still persists and nothing Is being done to dispel it says the doctor who asked to remain un named He says the University of British Columbia and the BC College of Physicians and Sur Surgeons geons do not tell new doctors that there are advantages to practice In small northern towns such as broad general experi experience ence and availability of hospital beds Consequently every centre in Northern and Central BC Is short of medical men In relation to the national ratio of one doc doctor tor for every 800 to 1200 per persons sons And an announcement today by the BC College and Physicians and Surgeons seems to bear him out The college has announced changes In regulations designed to make the Central Interior more attractive to doctors Emergency permits will be given graduate doctors from Britain the United States Australia and New Zealand Similar permits will be issued to a few elderly Canadian doc doctors tors who have never written the examinations said Dr Gunn All doctors however would be required to write the examina examinations tions eventually We are concerned about the shortage of doctors in the In Interior terior said Dr Lynn Gunn registrar of the college We have decided that the change of regulations Is nec necessary essary but will of course make sure that only pioperly qualified practitioners get the temporary licences Once fully qualified they will be on the same footing as BC doctors They can then practice where they like McBride has one doctor to serve an area of 6000 persons Vanderhoof has two doctors for 7000 Burns Lake has two doc doctors tors for 8000 Prince George Is relatively healthy It has 22
