chips produced from small wood by sawlog opera operators � tors In a pronouncement of policy regarding the provinces close utilization or small wood policy Mr Willlston said saw log operators whose timber sales are In PHAs must give the first refusal rights to the pulp mills who hold the PHA licence Some operators in the Prince George area have complained that the ruling removes com competition � petition in chip sales but others see it as the fairest way to en ensure � sure the pulp mills of a wood supply Torest Service chief forester FS McKinnon said operators in the Prince George andKam loops forest districts because they are in PHAs will be the first to be immediately affected by the new policy He gave this example If the revised utilization rule adds 100 million cubic feet of wood to a pulpwood harvesting area the pulpmlll holding the PHA will automatically be given 40 per cent or 40 million cubic feet of the small wood wood between seven inches and elev eleven � en inches diameter at breast height The remaining 60 million cubic feet will be divided on a pro rata basis among existing operators who harvest on a sustained yield basis Operators are not compelled to enter the smallwood game but the policy Is tailored to en entice � tice most in There are three provisos for small wood harvest There must first be a con contract � tract for sale of the chips pro produced � duced from the small wood which will be added to the saw log operators quota The operator must agree to harvest to the seven inch dbh tree Finally the PHA licensee must be given the right of first refusal on chips produced from the small trees The only chips free for com competition � petition in the Prince George forest district will be those produced from the 11 -inch dbh and up wood They Know Precisely Baloney I Inland Natural Gas says it cant tell how much gas is consumed in the Prince George area The sleight-of-hand experts employed by Inland say it would take too much bookkeeping to figure it out But the truth is they just dont want customers here to know how much money the gas trust is bleeding from the Central Interior There is only one customer from the West coast natural gas transmis transmission � sion line at Prince George Inland And if Inland and Westcoast dont know how much gas is going down the main then their officials shouldnt be running a gas company they should be out playing with the other kids in a sandpile But they know all right And it isnt sand theyre piling up It is profit at Prince George expense Profit that was fifty per cent higher this year
