gets lost That seems to he the only hope the B C canoeists have for overcoming the 90 minute lead Manitoba holds in the 3500 mile race from Rocky Mountain House Alta to Montreal BC is in second place as the 10 teams repiesen ting eight provinces and two territories of Canada take a three day break at the halfway mark in the race Bill Blackburn chief voyageur of the B C team recalled in an interview that fateful lap between Amaranth and Delta on Lake Manitoba where all the teams but Manitoba lost their way Blackburn a Prince George life in insurance � surance underwriter said the team was extremely upset over the circumstances surrounding its poor showing The canoes were three miles offshore heading along the same course when Manitoba turned toward a tower on shore he said The rest of the pageant kept going straight on Later Blackburn -aid the Manitoba crew indicated they had known the tower was near the finishing point a fact the other teams hadnt been told But there is another area of disappointment for the BC team Blackburn said the BC government has given the team little financial or moral support The provincial government is supply supplying � ing camping equipment and a upcoming zoning hearings beginning July 10 This could take two or three months he said Supporting the bylaw Aid Stagg said somewhere weve got to get guidelines for de development � velopment Were five years late All three aldermen objected to the form of question put to them and to the way the meeting was run There was objection to chair chairman � man Bulkley making speeches and to the bombardment canoeists gather to talk or sing Next morning however when they step into their canoes its all business While Blackburn was critical of the attention received from the B C govern government � ment he was high in his praise for the people of Prince George and Kamloops hometowns of the team members He said 200 persons from Prince George put their names to a telegram which the team leceived in Edmonton The mayor and council of Kamloops also sent a telegram wishing the team good luck All canoeists were invited to a lobster dinner when they arrived in Winnipeg and Blackburn called the New dismissal had caused him unnecessary embarrassment In a written statement Bar Barrett � rett said the public had misin misinterpreted � terpreted his dismissal because council had mishandled the matter His statement reads Re Recent � cent comments made to me make it clear that my dismissal by the City of Prince George has been misinterpreted by the public The question was mishandled by council and leaves me no alternative but to make a state statement � ment Council dismissed me for reasons it felt was adequate and that is its responsibility I am very critical however the statement goes on of the events following my dismissal Council failed to notify me of its decision but released it to the press The result was that I re received � ceived my notice through the press Council
