said The point is we dont get the practice except about once a month We dont get to take the truck out and practice run the hoses or go through the panel and we know two or three times as much as the smoke filled shafts At 1 pm EST company officials feared as many as 70 miners could still be pinned in the mine Sheriff Robert Tennant of Marion County said 21 men had escaped or had been pulled from the mine But James Mc McCartney � Cartney of the Mountaineer Coal Co said 70 men were missing The first blast just before 6am blew machinery through one of the mines portals Ten nant said and closed it as an avenue of rescue Teams gath gathered � ered around the Farmington portal one mile away to con centrate rescue efforts McCartney said eitheer gas or coal just set off the explosion and fire which still was sending towers of smoke from mine entrances early this afternoon All communication into the mine was lost McCartney said Rescue teams working in freezing temperatures and snow flurries
