MAYOR Takeover to help Rupert PRINCE RUPERT BC CP The provincial govern government ment takeover of Columbia Cellulose forest operations here will stabilize the citys economy and speed develop development ment of Prince Rupert as a port Mayor Peter Lester said Tuesday Mayor Lester said the takeover is very welcome and will undoubtedly lead to improved rail service which in turn will aid the citys development as a port As far as we are concerned the government wouldnt do it unless they had assurance that they could make the ope operation ration more viable than it is how he said in an interview And the obvious way to make it more viable is to reduce the cost of chips used in making pulp said the mayor Most pulp mills bought low cost chips from local sawmills but Colcel used whole logs which are much more expensive Mr Lester said the cost of chips could be reduced by establishing a spur line from Terrace to Nass camp and he is convinced the provincial government has just such a line in mind They must have had some agreement with CNR and the federal government to put in a spur line to reduce CNR rates and to work out a joint utilization of the tracks said mayor Lester The primary thing is that the mill will operate there has been a good deal of uncer taintyHe said the govern government ment will probably make Col Colcel cel operations more pollution free because they are so concerned about the environment Len Dirks second vice president of local 4 of the Pulp and Paperworkers of Canada said the takeover is a great relief to both the millworkers and the business community of Prince Rupert Finally there will be some stability in the community It is based on two industries fishing and pulp The fishing industry is seasonal and even the business community relies on that Colcel payroll And its just been hanging in there for a long time how long can a company go on los losing ing money CANADAS SONGBIRD ANNE MURRAY tests the chilly temperature
