really
Isn't
very
well-known
at
all,
except
to
people
with
a
direct
connection.
John
Furlong
Is
convinced
that
is
changing,
with
better
things
in
store
for
athletic
achievement,
With
a
relatively
small
enrolment
(about
300)
Prince
George
College
isn't
unlike
the
early
story
of
Notre
Dame
University
in
Nelson.
Furlong,
a
26-year-old
native
of
Dublin,
came
to
Canada
In
1969
as
a
21-year-old
veteran
of
four
international
sports.
After
a
year
in
Burns
Lake,
he
came
here
and
spent
two
years
at
the
college.
He
left
in
June,
1972,
to
return
to
his
native
Ireland,
which
he
has
represented
in
international
competition
in
basketball,
volleyball,
team
handball
and
soccer,
In
addition
to
coaching
the
Irish
national
women's
basketball
team
the
past
two
years,
he
also
played
for
the
men's
national
team.
He
admitted
his
involvement
with
two
teams
meant
a
tough
schedule
"But
sports
at
the
national
level
in
Ireland
is
not
as
professional
as
here,"
Team
selections
are
confined
to
Southern
Ireland
because
of
the
civil
problems
and
bloodshed
in
the
north,
where
Furlong
says
"There's
no
sanity."
In
his
two
years
coaching
the
women's
team
It
was
undefeated
in
14
international
games,
In
such
places
as
Iceland,
Holland,
England,
Scotland,
France
and
Sweden.
They
won
the
four-country
(British
Isles)
championship,
beating
highly-rated
Scotland
by
two
points.
Furlong
left
Prince
George
in
1972
because
he
wanted
to
study
more
and
because
there
were
developing
opportunities
in
Ireland
for
working
in
recreation
management,
He
managed
a
recreation
centre
for
the
government.
He
got
the
experience
he
was
looking
for
then
was
"Glad
to
come
back
to
Prince
George
when
the
college
came
looking
for
me."
He's
now
the
head
of
the
physical
education
department,
plus
looking
after
public
relations.
t

College
looking
good
After
playing
internationally
for
Ireland
for
eight
years
he
says
"It
never
got
to
the
stage
where
it
looked
like
we
might
win
a
gold
medal
and,
at
26,
I'm
not
ax
competitive
as
before,"
Furlong
sees
success
at
the
college,
based
on
present
potential
and
past
performance,
Well-known
swimmer
Jim
Fowlie,
now
world
ranked,
Is
a
graduate
of
the
college
and
Furlong
says
"There
are
a
couple
of
others
who
look
like
they'll
make
it,"
Although
the
college
is
filled
to
capacity
and
quite
a
few
students
had
to
be
turned
down
this
year,
there
are
plans
for
expansion
next
year
Non-Catholics
can
attend
and
classroom
size
compares
favorably
to
the
public
school
system.
Furlong,
who
used
to
teach
math
as
well,
but
now
confines
his
efforts
to
physical
education,
says
college
athletic
and
academic
spirit
is
"incredible".
The
college
has
a
cross-country
running
team
that's
been
clobbering
local
competition
and
Furlong
hopes
to
get
them
Into
a
major
event
in
Vancouver.
The
runners
are
on
the
road
at
6
a.m.
daily
and
run
12
miles
a
day.
With
about
half
the
students
living
at
the
college,
along
with
staff,
there
is
much
togetherness
and
continuing
development
In
off-school
hours.
Girls
outnumber
boys
slightly
in
the
enrolment
and
have
equal
athletic
opportunities.
Furlong
is
trying
especially
hard
to
get
team
handball
going
and
plans
an
Oct.
18
clinic
for
all
schools.
"It's
the
second
most
popular
indoor
game
in
the
world,
but
hardly
played
here."
Basketball
and
volleyball
are
other
major
college
sports.
"We
have
quite
a
talented
bunch
of
kids."
For
the
first
time
since
1972
the
college
plans
to
enter
north
central
zone
playoffs
in
"whatever
is
appropriate
for
us."
Where
there
isn't
any
competition,
Furlong
hopes
to
get
his
students
into
local
men's
and
women's
leagues.
It's
an
ambitious
and
impressive
situation
especially
when
you
consider
there
are
only
about
150
kids
to
pick
from.
