for PGA Shark
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Greg Norman became almost testy when someone suggested his $207,000 (U.S.) cheque and a record-matching victory might atone for his loss in the Masters.
“Nothing will ever make up for it,” responded the. Australian after posting a seven-stroke victory Sunday at the Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament. “Even if I win the next 20 tournaments, that won’t make up for it.”
Norman lost to Jack Nicklaus by a single stroke in the Masters, and by one to Fuzzy Zoeller in the Heritage tournament in his past two starts.
Those losses, he said were on his mind when he teed off Sunday in the final round of the five-day, 90-hole Las Vegas Invitational, with $1,150,000 in prize money the richest tournament on the PGA Tour.
“You don’t want to think like that (about the losses), but it’s there in the back of your mind,” Norman said.
But he quickly erased any thoughts of victory from the minds of would-be challengers. The Great White Shark birdied two of the first, four holes, increased his lead to four shots, then took it out of doubt with four consecutive birdies beginning on the eighth hole.
“That’s it, boys,” the lighthaired Norman said. “You’ll have to go hard to catch me.”
   No one came close.
Norman shot a seven-under-par 65 for the last 18 holes at the Las Vegas Country Club and won by seven strokes, matching the largest margin on the Tour this year.
His 333 total for the week — which included two eagles, 34 birdies and 11 bogeys — tied the Tour
record for 90 holes and, at 27 under par, matched the most strokes below par ever shot.
It appeared he would break the mark until he three-putted the last two greens, for "a bogey on 17 and a par on the 18th.
His third American tour triumph, which goes with more than 30 others around the world, was worth $207,000, which lifted him into the money-winning lead for the year at $343,774.
Dan Pohl finished a distant second at 69-340. He won $124,200.
Former U.S. Open and PGA champion Larry Nelson, with a closing 69, and Steve Pate, with a 67 in the gusty wind, were another shot back at 341. Each earned $66,700.
Dave Barr of Richmond earned $4,145 after carding a 69 for a total of 350, eight shots ahead of Dan Halldorson of Brandon, Man. Halldorson won $2,070 after finishing with a 76.
   ■ Gene Littler shot a one-under-par 71 Sunday to score a two-shot victory over Don January in the $250,000 Sunwest Bank-Charley Pride senior golf tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.
Littler, who led the tournament from start to finish, had a 54-hole, 14-under-par total of 202 over the Four Hills Country Club course.
It was Littler’s first individual title on the PGA circuit in more than two years.
Bob Charles finished third with a final-round 71 and 208 total. Chi Chi Rodriguez and Harold Henning were next at 209.
January earned $22,500 and Charles, in his first year on the senior tour, earned $18,750.
Al Balding of Toronto earned $9,062 after rounds of 67-73-71 for a 211 total.
RCGA hits golfers
MONTREAL (CP) - Twenty amateur golfers from Montreal and Ottawa have been suspended retroactively for nine months by the Royal Canadian Golf Association for playing for prize money in a tournament last year.
The RCGA, based in Oakville, Ont., also wants the more than 100 other unnamed participants at the Outaouais Golf Club, near Ottawa, to turn themselves in or face a stif-fer penalty in the future.
“The golfing fraternity being what it is, it means we will find out at some point the names of everyone who played in the tournament,” said Stephen Ross, RCGA director of amateur rules. “The best advice for them is to tell us now who they are.”
Some of the better-known players named were: Dr. Pierre Archam-bault, two-time Quebec Amateur
Blazers pad lead in junior playoffs
KAMLOOPS, B.C. (CP) - Greg Hawgood’s goal at 5:25 of overtime lifted the Kamloops Blazers to a 5-4 win Sunday over the Medicine Hat Tigers and a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Hockey League final.
Greg Evtushevski scored twice for Kamloops and assisted on another, while Mike Nottingham and Ron Shudra added singles.
Al Conroy, Trevor Lyndon, Guy Phillips and Gord Hynes countered for Medicine Hat.
Kamloops scored three power-play goals and the Tigers scored twice with the man advantage. Members of both coaching staffs felt specialty teams were the difference.
“We just tried to keep it outside and move it quickly,” said Kamloops assistant coach Donnie Moores. “Both teams have had trouble at equal strength.
“Both are matching lines regularly and there are lots of close battles going on. Specialty teams have been the rule of the series.”
Tigers’ head coach Doug Sauter pointed out Kamloops has 10 power play pnals in the series and has ^iven up two short-handed goals.
That shows they’re going all out." said Sauter, “while we just aren’t clicking. We have to score more goals. I thought we carried the play tonight. The 48-hour rest really helped us.”
The teams meet again tonight in Kamloops.
Saints rebound
HERSHEY. Pa. (AP) — Rod Shutt’s short-handed goal in the final minute of the second period Saturday night carried the St. Catharines Saints to a 2-1 AHL Calder Cup victory over the Hershey I -ars.
l'he Bears lead the best-of-seven South Division final 3-2. The sixth game is tonight in St. Catharines.
Hershey had taken an early 1-0 load on Bemie Johnston’s breaka-j ay goal in the Yirst period. The baints tied the game on a backhander by Greg Britz in the middle period.
With the Bears on an extended power play, Shutt stole the puck at his own blue line and broke in alone to score on goalie Ron Hex-tall.
Don Nachbaur of Prince George playa for Hershey.
   Rugby teams win
The two Prince George entries in the four-team Central Interior Rugby Union had little difficulty in their season-opening games on the road during the weekend.
The Gnats Rugby Club steam-rolled over- Williams Lake 49-0, while the Barbarians trounced Quesnel 24-0.
Matthew Pearce scored three tries and Matt Howes added two to pace the Gnats. Bob Ormond, Ken Thomas and Ken Lipinski added a try each, while Rich Paciejewski kicked five converts and added one penalty kick.
The Barbarians got two tries each from Derek Barries and Allan Reynolds in their win over Quesnel. Tony Reynolds and Don Ser-watkewich added one try each and Steve Mamie, booted a convert and a penalty kick.
The Gnats and Barbarians play Sunday at Connaught field.
Dyck runner-up
Clayton Dyck was the top Prince George finisher at the B.C. wrestling club championships on the weekend in Vancouver.
Dyck, a Kelly Road Secondary School graduate who won the heavyweight class at the high school championships in 1985, finished second in the open class and third in the Greco-Roman competition.
He also had an exhibition match against Olympic silver medalist Bob Molle, a former Simon Fraser University wrestler.
Jason Turcotte, a Kelly Road student, finished fourth in his weight class. Another Kelly Road alumnus, Tony Bjerkness, took fifth in his class.
champion; Jacques Godin, 1983 Quebec Amateur winner and low amateur jn the Quebec Open last year; and Mickey Batten, winner of the 1973 Quebec Amateur.
The suspensions end July 1, at which time players must apply to the RCGA for reinstatement for a fee of $50.
Players who turn themselves in will face the same penalty.
Suspended players will miss one Quebec Golf Association tournament, the Montreal Spring A Championship at nearby Hem-mingford on June 2.
Meanwhile, a decision is expected early next week about whether to hold the annual Meagher’s Invitational match-play championship this month, when it is usually held, or to shift the event to the fall, when the best players would be allowed to play.
