 STRIKE HITS COAL MINE
Staff reporter
More than 1,000 workers at the Quintette coal mine near Tumbler Ridge remained off the job today, shutting down the mine fo: a second day in a wildcat strike over safety procedures.
Members of the United Steelworkers of America left their jobs Sunday, saying Quintette management has put productivity over safety. The walkout was not sanctioned by the union, which scheduled a meeting for its 1,025 members for noon today.
Union executives were meeting most of this morning and couldn’t be reached for comment.
John Sanders, Quintette vice-president and general manager, said he is “aware of some specific safety concerns,” but said he doesn’t know what the concerns are.
Quintette and the steelworkers union recently signed a three-year collective agreement which expires in June 1989.
