Canada and the U.S. inked a final agreement on trade in softwood lumber Saturday, felling the biggest trade irritant between the two countries in advance of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's imminent visit to Washington. But leaders of B.C.'s forest industry say they will not support the deal unless significant amendments are Choice citizens Citizen staff One of the biggest attractions each year at Canada Day in the Park is the announcement of the Prince George Citizen of the Year shortlist. The finalists are always an elite handful of fine volunteers and community heroes and this year there are five. They were introduced in person on Canada Day mainstage by Bill Lynch, who was chosen as the 2005 Citizen of the Year. Everyone there would agree the audience was huge, but just how big was it? "You couldn't tell," said Marlies Greulich, executive director of the Multicultural Heritage Society that organizes the event. "The crowd is usually packed in front of the stage, but there was a lot of green out there this year. Most of the people moved back to trees to get the shade." Large congregations filled the Rotaract Waterspray Park, the shady picnic shelter, Exploration Place and anywhere else that had a shadow. No clouds in the sky, little wind and several preceding days of hot weather meant the 30-degree climate put a flame under the whole event. "It was a little bit too hot," Greulich said, noting that many seniors in particular cut their visit to the park short. "We are always full, but I feel like the numbers were down. That's maybe an impression I have from the troubles we had getting volunteers. So many of the ones we depend on made other plans this year. A lot of the people were gone to the lake or away for the weekend." In the final two days before Canada Day in the Park, an urgent media campaign succeeded in filling the many holes in the volunteer ranks. -- See FIREWORKS on page 3 Photos by Chuck Nisbett Nominees for the Prince George Citizen of the Year shortlist were announced Saturday and are (from top to bottom): John Baragar, Jim Blake, Robert Scott, Baljit Sethi, and Trudy Swaan.
