WHL Writers Poll
None of the top four teams changed in this week's Western Major Junior Hockey Writers Association poll, but there was plenty of movement in the rest of the pack as the Western Hockey League finished its second week of the season. The Vancouver Giants retained their lead atop the league and poll standings with three more wins and are now just one of two teams in the WHL with a perfect record. Voters gave the 5-0 Giants all 15 first-place picks. Everett's Silvertips are 4-0 and stayed in second spot. With a 2-1 record in the past seven days, the Lethbridge Hurricanes went from 13th a week ago to sixth this time out, and only a few points away from fourth. At 3-1-1-0 they lead the Central Division. Other teams making notable moves up the poll include Red Deer (up four spots to 10th, 3-1 in the past week), Tri-City (up four spots to eighth, 2-0) and Portland (up four spots to 17th, 2-0). For the second week in a row the Kootenay Ice had the biggest drop in the poll. After getting a sixth-place ranking in the WMJHWA preseason poll, they dropped four spots last week and six spots this week and are now 16th in the poll with a 1-3 record. Kootenay moved to the Central Division this year as part of division realignment resulting from the B.C. Division adding the expansion Chilliwack Bruins. The Prince George Cougars also dropped off, to 11th. The Cougars were ranked fifth to start the year, then dropped to seventh for Week 2. The Western Major Junior Hockey Writers Association is comprised of writers in each of the WHL's 21 cities and releases polls weekly during the season. A first-place vote is worth 21 points, with 20 for second, 19 for third and so on, down to one point for a last-place vote. The poll, showing last week's ranking, first-place votes and total points: 1. (1) Vancouver Giants, (15) 315 2. (2) Everett Silvertips, 298 3. (3) Medicine Hat Tigers, 286 4. (4) Regina Pats, 240 5. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The federal prosecutor overseeing an investigation of steroids in baseball said Monday a newspaper report that five players, including Roger Clemens, had used illegal performance-enhancing drugs contained "significant inaccuracies." Citing sealed court filings, the Los Angeles Times reported that former pitcher Jason Grimsley had named Clemens, his Houston Astros teammate Andy Pettitte, and Baltimore Orioles Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons. The story first appeared on the Times' website on Saturday and quickly was seized on by print and broadcast media outlets. San Francisco U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan issued a statement Monday, saying: "In view of the recent news reports purporting to identify certain athletes whose names had been redacted from the government's search warrant filings in the Grimsley matter, and in the interests of justice, please be advised that these reports contain significant inaccuracies." A spokesman for Ryan declined to elaborate. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Times had no immediate comment. The newspaper reported that an unidentified source with access to the document allowed the newspaper to view it, and a second source provided additional details about the document.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- If Barry Bonds is back with the San Francisco Giants next season, and that still seems to be a big if, owner Peter Magowan said the slugger will not be the centrepiece of the roster any longer. "I think we need to go in a new direction," Magowan said Monday after the club announced manager Felipe Alou's contract would not be renewed. "We have for a long time had a strategy that has worked well until the last two years, when it hasn't worked so well. The strategy has been one of having a great player -- maybe the greatest player in the game -- at the centrepiece and filling in with veteran players. For a long time that worked well. It caught up with us the past couple of years. Now we do need to get younger and healthier."
