His first band was Bluesology and Elton later took his stage name from the band’s saxophone player Elton Dean and the frontman Long John Baldry. John and Bernie Taupin met in 1967 and they began writing songs together. They became so prolific at songwriting Taupin would write the lyric in half an hour and John would compose the piece within the hour. From 1970 to 1976 the pair would produce 14 albums including Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou and Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy. Amongst these, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was the first album ever to enter the Billboard Chart at No. 1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, with its string of American No. 1 hit singles and unbroken two month run at the top of the Billboard Top 100, became an all-time classic. Elton John shared the stage with John Lennon in 1974. John said it was one of his most memorable performances and was Lennon’s final concert.
